Scarthin Books Art Room.
We've recently completed an installation on the ceiling of the Art Room at the wonderful Scarthin Books in Cromford, Derbyshire (May 2014).
We wanted to create the feel of a Persian rug on the ceiling and we've used the themes of the books in this room - art, collections, fashion, costumes, textiles, films, antiques etc. Together with the bookshop we all decided on a colour palette of deep reds, golds and purples, then we both set up a range of still life collections to photograph objects associated with the themes in the room. All the objects we've used have meanings, stories and memories associated with them and we've then turned many of the photographs into mirror images - enabling us to explore a kaleidoscope and repeat pattern effect.
Its taken two nights (over night, after shop hours) to then fix this onto the ceiling, a lot of going up and down ladders and carefully working out the repeat pattern (a very good brain exercise we realised!). We're really pleased with the effects this creates and how the objects become abstracted - so you notice different things and different elements more and more as you look at it all.
We adore working with Scarthin Books, its such a creative inspirational place and their support is brilliant.
