Katy DoncasterQualifications / Experience / Practice
I have worked as a creative practitioner in communities and education since 1995. I have always enjoyed working outside, and encouraging the use of outside spaces to teach all areas of the curriculum. Many children nowadays are not used to exploring and being in the wild, and yet it is the perfect setting to develop a myriad of skills. Working now as a Forest Schools leader, I support children to undertake many skills, for example, learning to use hand tools, explore flora and fauna, make a fire and cook on it. The sense of satisfaction, achievement and confidence that children get from these activities is enormous. I use many techniques and materials for working both inside and outside, collaborating with adults and children to come up with exciting explorations and new ideas. As an artist, I am hugely influenced by working and being outside, combined with a love of stories, foraging and cooking. I am fascinated by the way people have always made stories to understand the world, and the folk lore that surrounds places, trees and plants, ceremonies and rituals, and the music and food that is part of these.
